No visit to Hawaii is complete without a trip to the top of Diamond head. At 762 ft (232 m), Diamond Head is not the highest point on O'ahu, but it certainly is one of the best for spectacular, 360° panoramic views. The trip, from the information center on the crater floor to the summit, is 0.8 mile (1.3 km) one way and climbs 560 feet (171 m) in elevation. From the summit area, all of Waikiki and Honolulu can be seen. Can you spot your hotel? ;-)
This hike is rated easy. Even those who are a little out of shape should be able to complete and enjoy this hike! We have taken Tutus & Papas (grandmas & grandpas) on this hike many times. We have taken children as young as six and we recommend it as a great family activity (although we do not recommend it for children under five years old).We took the 360° panoramic photo seen above from the top of Diamond Head on March 24th, 2009. Use your mouse (click and drag) to pan all the way around the photo. Zoom in using your shift key. Zoom out with the apple key (Mac) or control key (PC).
This hike is offered daily. Hotel pick-up can be arranged anytime from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Expect to return about three hours later. The park is open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Park entrance fees are included in the cost of your hike. Mornings are the best time to make this hike because it is usually cooler and shadier.
All of our hikes include round-trip transportation in our comfortable, air-conditioned van from your hotel in Waikiki to your destination, water, and use of binoculars & tripods. You are also welcome to use one of our courtesy backpacks or fanny packs, although they are generally not needed on this hike due to it's relatively short length.
